Katey Howes was a prolific author whose works included Magnolia Mudd and the Super Jumptastic Launcher Deluxe, Grandmother Thorn, and Be a Maker. Her books, celebrated for their creativity and warmth, were published by Ripple Grove Press, Sterling Children’s Books, and Carolrhoda. Katey also cherished her role as an author who wrote from “a small room in her basement,” where her stories came to life.
Before becoming a full-time author, Katey worked as a Physical Therapist at Plus Neurorehab, showcasing her dedication to helping others in multiple facets of her life. Her transition to writing allowed her to touch the hearts of children and families worldwide.
Katey Howes lived in Upper Makefield, Pennsylvania, with her husband and their three adventurous daughters. Her family was a source of inspiration and joy, and she often shared her love for storytelling with them.
Many friends and colleagues took to social media to express their sorrow and pay tribute to Katey’s generous spirit and profound impact on their lives. She even connected me with Merritt Books so I could be an author at Rhinebeck (NY Sheep & Wool Festival) last fall where this picture was taken. It was such a gift to meet her in person. She was so generous and filled with light. She radiated joy. My heart goes out to her family.”
Kristine Erekson Call also shared her grief, stating, “A dear kidlit friend of mine, Katey Howes, passed away and I’m heartbroken. I met Katey years ago when we were newly minted authors–right when our first books came out, and before we had agents. We swapped manuscripts and submission stories. And just three weeks ago I spent four days at The Highlights Foundation with her–talking books, kidlit publishing, teenage children, and life. I already miss Katey’s wit and wisdom, her love for life and kids, her creative thinking and of course her wonderful way with words.”
