Chief District Court Judge Alexander Banner Lyerly Passed Away, Banner Elk: We are saddened to announce that a longtime Chief District Court Judge Alexander Banner Lyerly passed away. Currently, the Banner Elk is mourning the death of Alexander Lyerly who was the Chief District Court Judge for the 24th Judicial District of North Carolina. He served there for over 34 years. As he was a renowned and reputed personality in North Carolina, people in large numbers are paying tribute to him. His contribution to the 24th Judicial District of North Carolina will be remembered forever.

Alexander Banner Lyerly Passed Away

Alexander Banner Lyerly was appointed as the judge for the 24th Judicial District in 1980 and he kept on working there till 2014. In August 2014, he retired from his service and received the Order of the Long Leaf Pine. Later, the Watauga County Courthouse honored him with a portrait dedication. Greg Horne who is the District Court Judge referred to Alexander Banner Lyerly as a man of absolute fairness, integrity, and dignity. Greg also added that Lyerly treated and behaved with all the defendants and their attorneys with respect and dignity.

Speaking about Lyerly’s career, he was also a member of the National Association of Juvenile and Family Court Judges, the North Carolina State Bar, the American Judges Association, the State Bar of Texas, the American Judicature Society, the American Bar Association, and the Internation Bar Association. Nevertheless, Alexander Banner Lyerly was also certified to be a specialist judge in juvenile law.

Chief District Court Judge Alexander Banner Died

Speaking about Alexander Banner Lyerly’s wife, he was married to Brenda. His wife is a longtime mayor of Banner Elk. Brenda served the surrounding area, and state in a variety of ways including service with Crossnore Home for Children, the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games, and the North Carolina Judicial Standards Committee. The late District Court Judge was also an inductee of the Avery County Hall of Fame.
